Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty are interested in negotiating a 'ceasefire' with America. This after two months of violent riots that have left the city reeling. US President Donald Trump sent federal agents to Portland to secure federal buildings that have come under the attack of rioting arsonists most every night.

Wheeler and Hardesty have called for an immediate meeting with Department of Homeland Security leadership and DHS Acting Secretary Chad Wolf "to discuss a ceasefire and removal of heightened federal forces from Portland," reports KGW8.

Wheeler had previously stated that he would decline to talk to Wolf if he was invited to.

Wheeler's request follows reports that more federal agents are heading to Portland in an attempt to quell the violence and destruction that Wheeler has been unable to reign in.

The deployment of the agents was authorized by the Trump administration to protect federal buildings. The Mark O. Hatfield federal courthouse, inside of which federal agents have been barricaded while rioters rage outside, has been the site of nightly fires and bombardments.

During a phone call between Wheeler and Wolf about two weeks ago, Wheeler said he did not want federal officers on Portland streets. Despite this, he has done little to curb the protestors other than to attempt to appease them by appearing at a struggle session. When he spoke to the massive crowd about his sympathies with their cause, they cursed at him and called for his resignation.

Hardesty is also against federal officers in Portland though she hasn’t agreed with Wheeler’s handling of the protests so far. She recently said to Wheeler that if he "can't control the police, give me the Portland Police Bureau." Wheeler also serves as police chief.

Wolf told Fox News on Sunday that "additional actions" will likely be taken this week.

"We’re working with the FBI there in Portland and the US Attorney’s office there in Portland to address the leaders that are organizing this and then going after them," Wolf said.

This comes after a joint letter was sent to Congress on Monday, requesting that congressional leaders enact legislation that would prohibit the use of federal officers in their cities.

Thousands of demonstrators were out on the weekend and many conflicts arose between protestors and federal officers. There were 22 people arrested on the weekend who are now facing federal charges.
