Netflix has created a massive controversy for itself with their new film ‘Cuties’, which critics are lambasting as “pedophilic.” Even IMDB has classified the film as having scenes which are “lawfully defined as pedophilia.” The movie depicts a cast of preteen girls who join a dance team, and the entire film is populated by explicit shots of the girl’s bodies, references to child molestation, and dance numbers that have made viewers incredibly uncomfortable. Many on Twitter are referring to the movie as unabashed child pornography.
Despite the millions of dislikes on the trailer video on YouTube for "Cuties," woke Twitter has managed to come up with ways of defending the film. Tim Robey, writer for the telegraph, seems to look down on those who have the nerve to be uncomfortable with the movie.
Alyssa Rosenberg seems to be more offended at the backlash over children being exploited, than the children actually being exploited.
The New Yorker published a piece stating that "Cuties" is an extraordinary film that has become the target of a right-wing campaign, while regular people who aren’t tainted by partisan hate are left wondering why being anti-pedophilia is somehow a right-wing position. I tweeted the following about politicizing an issue that shouldn’t be political at all:
Political commentator Mike Cernovich took note of people attempting to smear the movie’s detractors as right-wing hate mongers and tweeted the following:
Regardless of the intent of the director, which some was to raise awareness about the sexual exploitation of children, children were literally sexually exploited to create the film. This is on par with abusing an animal in an attempt to raise awareness about animal abuse. It contradicts any hope of a positive or productive message and instead creates bait for sick individuals who seek this content out who would normally have their computers raided by the FBI for such a thing.
