A woman is in custody on Friday after biting a police officer while protesting with a baseball bat at the Capitol building in Washington, DC. The woman "became combative" and attacked the police, according to The Hill.
The woman has been identified as Olivia Romano, and according to Capitol Police, Romano "appeared agitated" and "started yelling at our officers" around 9:30 am. Romano allegedly attacked the officers who attempted to disarm her.
Romano was attending a climate protest in the nation's capitol on Friday. Climate activists made their way to Washington to make their opposition to fossil fuels known and to call on the president to put an end to all fossil fuel projects. Friday was the last day of scheduled protests, according to ABC.
"When she raised the bat, the officers attempted to take it. At that moment, the woman became combative and bit one of the officers," the Capitol Police said in a statement.
ABC reported that she was yelling "defund the police" during her arrest.
Romano remains in custody as charges are pending. A motive has yet to be determined, but Romano tweeted a photo of herself carrying the bat before the attack.
"Today's the day," she wrote. "Headed to Washington DC to protect our Indigenous Water Protectors & allies being illegally arrested by Joe Biden Secret Service for peacefully protesting. This shit cannot stand. We The People are taking back our power."
Romano had previously posted her opposition to the economic system of capitalism, as well, and called for revolution now and a general strike.
Last week, the Capitol Police removed a man from a vehicle parked in front of the Supreme Court. The man refused to move his illegally parked car or cooperate with the police. Police noted the man did something similar in August "and made concerning statements."
In April, a man rammed his car into the security barricade at the Capitol, which killed Capitol Police Officer William "Billy" Evans and injured another officer.
