A woman at a graduation party in Charleston, West. Virg. shot and killed an armed man who arrived at the party and began shooting at people.
The angered man who arrived and began firing shots at dozens of people was swiftly neutralized by the woman, who police say was legally carrying her firearm.
According to WCHS, the suspect in this case was 37-year-old Dennis Butler. He’s described as someone with a criminal history, and people reprimanded him for speeding in the Vista View Apartment Complex area while there was a party going on.
Lieutenant Tony Hazel of the Charleston Police Department said there was no other known motive besides that, with what happened next. Kids were present in the vicinity in what’s described as a party with 30 to 40 attendees.
Butler left, but came back roughly a half-hour later with what authorities say was an "AR style rifle." He opened fire at partygoers after grabbing the firearm from the backseat of his car. But an unnamed woman had a pistol on-hand and fatally shot the suspect several times before anyone else was injured.
"Instead of running from the threat, she engaged with the threat and saved several lives last night," Hazel summarized. Police say the unnamed woman prevented what could’ve been a mass casualty incident.
Butler’s rap sheet showed he had a felony firearm charge and a misdemeanor for handling stolen goods, amongst his past 20 arrests.
Witnesses of the shooting cooperated with the police as soon as they arrived. No charges are being filed but the Kanawha County Prosecutor’s office is expected to review the case.
