On Friday, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg's efforts to indict former President Donald Trump is "all politics."
Speaking to WABC Radio, Cuomo said, "I don't understand why Bragg is putting such emphasis on this case," which alleges Trump paid hush money to pornstar Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
"A person breaks the law I get it," Cuomo said. "But on the state side this is a misdemeanor case. It's really a federal case because he needs it to be a campaign finance fraud case which is a federal case and that's what Bragg is going to have to do to get a felony out of this."
For Bragg to elevate the charge to the status of a felony he would have to attach an "intent to defraud" motive to the accusation and try to charge Trump with a violation of New York state election law, and say that the cash was an illegal donation to Trump's campaign.
Cuomo claimed motions like this out of the DA's office "affirms everybody's cynicism," especially "when they see prosecutors bringing these political cases."
"I think it's all politics and that's what I think the people of this country are saying," Cuomo added.
Cuomo continued, "It just feeds that anger and that cynicism and the partisanship. It's a coincidence that Bragg goes after Trump and Tish James goes after Trump and Georgia goes after Trump? That's all a coincidence? I think it feeds the cynicism and that's the cancer in our body politic right now."
Cuomo added, "I'm sure they'll get an indictment" as Bragg works to have a Manhattan grand jury indict the former president.
In August of 2021, Andrew Cuomo resigned from his position after an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment revealed 11 cases against the governor. He denied all the accusations against him but acknowledged that he had a penchant for giving women pats on the back, calling them pet names such as "honey, sweetheart, and darling," and kissing men and women in a casual way.Powered by StructureCMS™ Comments
