Kamala Harris and Joe Biden both said that there was a double standard at play in the protests and riots over the summer compared to the violence that erupted in the capital on Wednesday, saying that there are "two systems of justice." But Harris is simply making things up because it suits her narrative. So is Joe Biden.
The Capitol Hill police lost one of their own yesterday. Brian D. Sicknick was injured in a physical confrontation with protestors and died from those injuries. For his service and his efforts to try to protect the Capitol, Officer Sicknick was basically called racist by both the incoming president and vice president.
President-elect Joe Biden, who takes office in less than two weeks, said "No one can tell me that if it had been a group of Black Lives Matter protesting yesterday, they wouldn't have been treated very, very differently than the mob of thugs that stormed the Capitol. We all know that's true, and it is unacceptable. Totally unacceptable. The American people saw it in plain view. And I hope it's sensitized them to what we have to do. Not many people know it."
Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who bailed protestors out of jail during the summer of rioting and chaos in 2020, wrote on Twitter that "We have witnessed two systems of justice: one that let extremists storm the U.S. Capitol yesterday, and another that released tear gas on peaceful protestors last summer. It’s simply unacceptable."
But there was tear gas used on Wednesday against the Trump supporters. And a woman was shot and killed by police, which did not happen during the summer riots and protests. The photos of suspects were released to the public by law enforcement, two individuals have already been federally charged, multiple arrests have been made, and the chief of the Capitol Hill police has already resigned from his post.
Biden said that it was his granddaughter, a senior in college, who pointed out this double standard, showing him a photograph of the police presence at the Lincoln Memorial this summer. But what Biden and his granddaughter are missing is that at the Lincoln Memorial this summer, those officers did not kill protestors. Biden said that his granddaughter told him "Pop. This isn't fair."
It has been unilaterally decided by media and Democratic politicians that the actions of those Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol on Wednesday and disrupted Congress were racist, and undertook their actions because of this racism. It has been decided that the failure of law enforcement to protect the Capitol was also racist somehow.
The most powerful politicians in the country are calling out a system of racism that they believe is at the core of our democracy and government. But they are the ones who are at the head of it, and these are not two upstarts who have just taken the helm, these are career politicians who have had power and implemented that power for decades upon decades.
Harris promoted a bail fund, and gave to it herself, that facilitated the release of a man accused of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old, another who assaulted a 71-year-old woman and burglarized her home, and still another man who allegedly stomped on the victim's head before robbing them.
During her time as a prosecutor, she wrote in her 2009 book, Smart on Crime, "Make no mistake, any effort to excuse or ignore criminal behavior leads to more criminal behavior."
Now that it suits their aims to frame those who oppose them as racist, which is a way to erase them from the conversation, that's what they will do, whether there's proof of that or not. The Capitol Hill police worked hard to protect the Capitol as Americans saw it unfold on social media. That they are derided for their efforts by the most powerful leaders in the country while rioters from the summer's violence are praised is the real double standard.
