Biden to hold rally in Minnesota on Friday as presidential race tightens

The late visit to Minnesota, a Democratic stronghold which has not voted for a Republican in a presidential election since 1972, could be a signal of nervousness from the Biden campaign.

Former Vice President Joe Biden will be returning to Minnesota on Friday to hold a rally, the Star Tribune reports.

The rally is set to take place in St. Paul, the state's capital, which shares a metropolitan area with the much larger city of Minneapolis. President Donald Trump will also be hosting a rally in the Minnesotan city of Rochester, the third largest city in the state.

The late visit to Minnesota, a Democratic stronghold which has not voted for a Republican in a presidential election since 1972, could be a signal of nervousness from the Biden campaign. In 2016, the Democrats held Minnesota by less than 45,000 votes. By contrast, former President Barack Obama held the state in 2012 by a margin of more than 225,000 votes.

Meanwhile, in a push to win over the state, Trump has already made three campaign stops in Minnesota while his campaign announces that they will be pouring more money into the campaign there.

The campaign event will be the Biden campaign's second in the state. Biden previously visited the city of Duluth in the northeast of the state, where he toured a training centre for labour unions on the state's first day of early voting.

The Biden campaign will also be hosting events in Iowa and Wisconsin on Friday.
