Fetterman previously suffered a stroke on May 13 2022, days before Pennsylvania's Democratic primary, but still managed to win the race. He is reportedly undergoing tests at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.
It was later revealed that the near fatal stroke was caused by a heart condition. He was off the campaign trail for months his race against Republican candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz. The month after the stroke, Fetterman released a letter from his cardiologist Dr. Ramesh Chandra that said, "The prognosis I can give for John's heart is this: if he takes his medications, eats healthy, and exercises, he'll be fine. If he does what I've told him, and I do believe he is taking his recovery and his health very seriously at this time, he should be able to campaign and serve in the US Senate without a problem."
During the debate between the two candidates, Fetterman was clearly impaired showing auditory processing issues and unusual speech patterns leftover from the stroke. Following the debate, Democrats and Republicans questioned his fitness to serve.
After the debate, Fetterman continued to show speech and auditory issues. In an interview with CBS, when asked about his fitness for office he said, "I'm sitting within a chair with you right now to have this conversation and really just address the fact that I'm absolutely sit to serve."
According to a spokesperson for the 53-year-old politician, “Towards the end of the Senate Democratic retreat today, Senator John Fetterman began feeling lightheaded. He left and called his staff, who picked him up and drove him to The George Washington University Hospital. Initial tests did not show evidence of a new stoke, but doctors are running more tests and John is remaining overnight for observation. He is in good spirits and talking with his staff and family.”
Earlier this month, it was revealed that because Fetterman is still struggling with auditory processing issues and that he needs the assistance of closed captioning. The Senate Sergeant at Arms reportedly installed a monitor on Fetterman's desk in the US Senate chamber to provided live captioning and a wireless tablet for committee hearings.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
