The campaign office for the effort to recall progressive Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon, received an envelope containing an unknown white powder and hate symbols in the mail.
Tim Rosales, who works for the Recall Gascon campaign, tweeted a photo of the envelope with white powder spread on a table. The letter accompanying powder was adorned with swastikas.
Rosales said, White powder and hate speech symbols just found in one of our #RecallDAGeorgeGascon return petition envelopes. Authorities have been notified and we are making sure our great volunteers are ok. There are a few bad/sick people out there."
Tim Lineberger, a spokesperson for the campaign told The New York Post that the envelope was sent to the campaign office in an envelope for returning petitions on Thursday.
Inside the envelope was a white powdery substance. Swastikas were drawn on the letter, which campaign staff told Fox LA read, "Send all your petitions to Adolf Hitler F*** you."
This led to an evacuation of the 7 campaign staff members who were present at the time. The Los Angeles Police Department was called to the location at the Westside Towers off the 11800 block of West Olympic Boulevard at approximately 4pm and responded with HAZMAT and the bomb squad. No injuries were reported.
Authorities later determined the white powder was baking soda.
Lineberger told the outlet that the office has received hate mail before, but never powder or racist remarks until the incident on Thursday.
The recall effort against Gascon has gained steam in recent weeks in response to the George Soros backed DA’s soft-on-crime policies. Gascon was slammed for making a 2021 plea deal with a prolific offender on a gun charge who went on to murder two El Monte police officers.
A total of 566,857 signatures, 10 percent of total Los Angeles County registered voters, must be submitted to the LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office by July 6 for the recall measure to qualify for the ballot. According to the campaign website, petitions need to be mailed out by Friday or returned to a Recall Gascon office by June 30.
