CBS misleadingly cites study funded by teachers' unions with unsubstantiated claims about job stress

In a video and article published on Friday, CBS allegedly misrepresented a "study" regarding the stress of being a teacher during a pandemic, wrongly saying that teaching was "the most stressful job to have."

Corey A. DeAngelis, a senior fellow at the CATO institute and the National Director of Research at School Choice Now, tweeted the above in criticism of the CBS piece.

The tweet thread continues:

".... the union-funded survey only says teachers reported more stress than the average it cannot conclude that teaching was 'the most stressful job to have during the pandemic'."

"CBS should correct the unsubstantiated claim."

"And their headline is misleading."

"The survey - funded by the teachers unions - compared responses from teachers to the general population that means teachers reported more stress than the average adult - not more than 'everyone else'."

According to the original CBS video which, together with the article, are being critiqued by DeAngelis, the study was performed by an institute called the Rand Corporation. The caption to the video read:

"What was the most stressful job to have during the pandemic? According to a study from the Rand Corporation, the answer is teaching."

And in the video itself, the following caption said "In January 2021, 78 percent of teachers said they experienced frequent job-related stress, compared to 40 percent of employed adults."
