Los Angeles based podcaster Jensen Karp claimed to have found two sugar coated shrimp tails inside his Cinnamon Toast Crunch and proceeded to share the odyssey on Twitter.
Ummmm @CTCSquares - why are there shrimp tails in my cereal? (This is not a bit) pic.twitter.com/tTjiAdrnVp

Jensen posted a picture on Monday of what he alleged were pieces of sugar covered shrimp that he discovered inside the Cinnamon Toast Crunch he bought at the Costco in Woodland Hills, California.
We’re sorry to see what you found! We would like to report this to our quality team and replace the box. Can you please send us a DM to collect more details? Thanks!

Cinnamon Toast Cruch offered to replace the box and said, "We're sorry to see what you found! We would like to report this to our quality team, " and asked Karp to send them more details.
After further investigation with our team that closely examined the image, it appears to be an accumulation of the cinnamon sugar that sometimes can occur when ingredients aren't thoroughly blended. We assure you that there's no possibility of cross contamination with shrimp.

Later in the day, the brand posted again and said , "After further investigation with our team that closely examined the image, it appears to be an accumulation of the cinnamon sugar that sometimes can occur when ingredients aren't thoroughly blended. We assure you that there's no possibility of cross contamination with shrimp."
Ok, we’ll after further investigation with my eyes, these are cinnamon coated SHRIMP TAILS, you weirdos. I wasn’t all that mad until you now tried to gaslight me? https://t.co/7DmADmoqUt pic.twitter.com/rSLE60pvoy

Jensen wasn’t buying the explanation and posted more images of his discovery and replied, "after further investigation with my eyes, these are cinnamon coated SHRIMP TAILS, you weirdos. I wasn't all that mad until you now tried to gaslight me?"
He also posted screenshots of his conversation with Cinnamon Toast Crunch, in which the company offered to send a pre-paid envelope to mail what he found so the company could "take a closer look."
Also, many of the squares have black marks, and some are dyed red? And yes, I ate a bowl before noticing all this. pic.twitter.com/Y9WWmsTznP

Jensen opted instead to look through the bag again to see what else might be inside. He then posted pics of a white string and cereal with "black marks" on them with many on Twitter guessing they were rodent droppings.
Hey I study crustaceans at the Natural History Museum in LA, those do look a bit like a shrimp's telson & uropods—tail. I would totally love to look at your "specimen" under a microscope, we might even be able to extract DNA to confirm its species or if it's indeed cinnamon sugar
— Adam Wall, Carcinologist (@AdamWall626) March 23, 2021
Adam Wall, the Collections Manager of Crustacea at The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County responded to Jensen and said "those do look a bit like a shrimp's telson & uropods—tail. I would totally love to look at your 'specimen' under a microscope, we might even be able to extract DNA to confirm its species or if it's indeed cinnamon sugar."
Jensen responded, "LET'S GET REAL NANCY DREW ABOUT THIS S--T." He added that his wife, Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World actress Danielle Fishel had checked the other bag in the family pack which appeared to be taped closed and was alleged to also include dental floss.
Jensen then posted that he was taking his box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch to a lab and that a research company would be testing the alleged shrimp.

The writer tweeted that he had "NO idea" how any items got into his cereal bags, and postulated that the items could have been tampered with at Costco, but he felt doesn't believe that explained the multiple discoveries in the bags.
"My point is - their initial reaction to shellfish being in the bag was to tell me it was sugar. Not to investigate the issue or look into it. It's a deadly allergy to many (and non-Kosher) and that didn't seem to matter beyond offering me a new box."
— Cinnamon Toast Crunch (@CTCSquares) March 23, 2021
Cinnamon Toast Crunch released a statement on March 23 that said, "While we are still investigating this matter, we can say with confidence that this did not occur at our facility. We are waiting for the consumer to send us the package to investigate further. Any consumers who notice their cereal box or bag has been tampered with, such as the clear tape that was found in this case" to contact them at 1-800-328-1144."
