On Monday night, a fight broke out between Spirit Airlines agents and a mother-and-daughter duo at the Philadelphia International Airport after the pair were told they had to pay an extra fee due to the bulk of their carry-on luggage.
A passenger who asked to remain anonymous told the Daily Mail, "I was shocked at how violent it was and how long it went on for. I don't know exactly who started it, but there was a lot of yelling and I turned around to see two Spirit employees fighting a mother and daughter."
"Someone was bleeding. At one stage a child got involved. Regardless of what he did, he's just a kid - he looked distraught," the passenger added.
The video shows the melee happening past the boarding desk near the gate preceding the loading bridge for the Fort Lauderdale-bound flight. The initial moments of the fight are obscured by the hallways, but multiple parties became absorbed in the brouhaha.
The footage shows a young boy screaming repeatedly into the free-for-all for his mother.
The Daily Mail described the 17-year-old daughter tugging at "a Spirit staffer's dreadlocks while an airport worker in a high vis jacket slaps her over the back of the head and shouts 'get off, get off.'"
The Spirit Airlines worker then threw several haymakers at the restrained teen.
The video shows the fisticuffs pouring back towards the desk as someone nearby yells "Where the f*ck is security?" and the young boy hits a Spirit worker and then dashes away, collapses, and weeps.
The now-shirtless and shoeless mom then grabbed a keyboard and swung it as another agent came up behind her and pulled her away, punched her, and tore off her wig.
A Philadelphia Police department spokesman said, "On Monday, January 30th, 2023, at approximately 7:29 pm police received information that several passengers were pulling apart a 24-year-old female complainant and a 17-year-old female along with her 39-year-old mother during an argument over additional baggage fees."
"At this time, the 17-year-old female attempted to access Jetway and was halted by the 24-year-old complainant when she was punched/hair pulled by the 17-year-old female being assisted by her 39-year-old mother," the spokesman said. "The 24-year-old female sustained a minor eyelid laceration. All participants were advised by police in reference to private criminal complaint documentation."
The fight happened at E Terminal and it delayed the Florida-bound flight by about an hour. The Daily Mail reports "24-year-old woman was left nursing a cut to her eye but nobody was seriously hurt."
