Rideau Hall has spent more than $100,000 in public money to attain legal representation in response to allegations of bullying and verbal harassment. This comes after a dozen public servants and former employees claimed confidentially that Gov. Gen. Julie Payette belittled, and publicly humiliated her staff.

The alleged toxic workspace allegation does is not exclusively relate to Payette as Assunta Di Lorenzo is also accused of bullying staff, reports the CBC. Di Lorenzo is Secretary to the Governor General.

A number of staff members have gone on leave or completely quit their positions, due to the toxic work environment.

Gov. Gen. Julie Payette has spent tens of thousands in public funds to hire experts, who can protect her. She hired former NDP national director Karl Bélanger and his firm Traxxion Strategies in August, costing $5,000. She also retained the former Supreme Court of Canada justice Michel Bastarache as "constitutional adviser." His fee thus far is $36,208.

Law firm Blakes has also been hired and is being paid $74,500 to date.

Payette burns cash

Taxpayer dollars are apparently the least of the governor general's worries. In August of this year, it was reported that Payette had spent $250,000 to increase the amount of privacy she had at Rideau Hall, one of her two official residences.

It was found that Payette had not moved into the residency yet, and that the $250,000 would go towards $140,000 for a staircase that was never built, and $117,500 on a private gate.

Payette was also found to be using a government jet for pick-ups and drop-offs at the Mirabel, Quebec cargo airport on the way to her cottage, according to CTV News.

It takes the government challenger roughly 19 minutes to fly from Ottawa to Mirabel—about 133 kilometres. The jet also has to prep for a couple hours before takeoff and costs close to $5,000 an hour while in flight. Her chauffeur-driven vehicle would take under 90 minutes to reach the terminal.
