Green Party leader Amita Kuttner told "settler" Canadians that they were living in a country that is "still perpetuating" genocide.
"I'd like to remind those of us who are settlers of our great responsibility towards justice, and especially in a country that is still perpetuating ongoing genocide," said Kuttner on Monday.
Kuttner is quoting the inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The term "genocide" has since been a political landmine, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau initially agreeing that Canada is committing genocide.
Following the findings, Trudeau told a crowd in Vancouver that "we accept their findings, including that what happened amounts to genocide."
Kuttner continued on, where the interim leader called for a "specific anti-trans hate strategy, and also one for homophobia as well as intersex rights."
"Today, I'm here for the occassion of the international day against homophobia, biphobia, intersexism, and transphobia. This week is very special to me, I am celebrating my one year on horomone replacement therapy, and 13 months after I had my chest surgery.
"Transness is certainly not about transition, and one does not have to transition to be trans, but I wanted to share this milestone and the utter joy of my experience of being able to become myself in a way that I wasn't expecting.
"There's a rise in anti-trans hate globally, and it's starting to show here in Canada as well. This is driven by far-right ideology and organizations that took root in the United Kingdom, and we're seeing many anti-trans bills in the United States as well, as well as the rise of hate and violence," Kuttner claimed.
"... We need a strategy in place immediately, preemptively, and at this point, honestly, it's not really preemptive anymore, but it's still early for us as we see this rise of hatred, and this strategy is needed."
"It's important to recognize anti-trans hate as a particular form of hatred, as we have other strategies for combatting other forms of hate, we need one for trans hate specifically," Kuttner said.
