The College Democrats at the University of Oklahoma are attempting to cancel an upcoming speech by conservative commentator Ann Coulter, calling the Turning Point USA event "irresponsible" to host.
The best-selling author, syndicated columnist, media pundit is slated to speak at the public university on Nov. 5, just two days following the presidential election.
According to an article by the student paper OU Daily, the campus TPUSA chapter will facilitate the live streamed political discussion, which the conservative organization's arm described as an “incredible and educational experience for students at OU" in a mass email.
The contested dialogue drew criticism from the school’s College Democrats.
“The College Democrats at the University of Oklahoma [OUCD] call on TPUSA to cancel their event with Ann Coulter to protect the well-being of the community,” the press release posted on Instagram read.
OUCD president Anna Hayes urged “all members of the OU community to stand together against any representation of hate or bigotry."
The progressive group also used coronavirus as an excuse for their cancellation call, claiming that a “large, in-person event is irresponsible.”
“Making the choice to not only host an event jeopardizing the safety of the OU community, but to do so in order to amplify a voice of hate, is profoundly concerning,” the plea continued.
This despite the fact that the Eventbrite page even instructs attendees to "follow all of the COVID-19 guidelines set by the University of Oklahoma and be socially distanced."
OUCD went on to emphasize that they are "committed to both protecting the physical health of our community and to uplifting marginalized groups on our campus..."
But axing the political conversation isn't enough. The left-wing body additionally implored TPUSA to “denounce white supremacy and bigotry” in the student community.
At the conclusion of the titular cease-and-desist letter, OUCD described itself as an affiliate of the Democratic National Committee that "strives to educate our campus about left-leaning politics, participate in discourse about current events, and disseminate relevant political information and involvement opportunities to members."
However, the DNC's official college outreach arm appears to strive to silence any "discourse about current events," mere days after the November general election. Meanwhile, the College Democrats of America's website claims to be a nationwide endeavor "dedicated to electing Democrats across the country using the power of the student voice."
When reached for comment, Coulter told The Post Millennial: "In order to be COVID compliant, we will not be admitting any students who are obese, so College Democrats have nothing to worry about."
A secondary petition started by a fellow OU student, Jack MacKay, cried for the Coulter event to be nixed. The Change.org petition—with fewer than 300 signatures at the time of publication—echoed the OUCD’s coronavirus fears talking point, arguing that "a speech by her in a room organized by TPUSA is almost certainly not going to fit OU's COVID-19 guidelines" and that Coulter herself has "downplay[ed] the dangers of COVID-19."
The page criticized TPUSA for sharing a since-deleted tweet in July that mocked masks, an uploaded Nicolas Cage meme with the caption: "me not wearing a mask while a leftist screams at me from their car from across the parking lot at whole foods." And according to the university's student-run snitch account, TPUSA's OU chapter was "exposed" for tabling without masks.
MacKay went on to allege that Coulter has a history of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, "using racially charged language around immigration and the practice of Islam," and informing the public that "colleges discriminate against white applicants and students while she belittles historical oppression and upholds the model minority myth."
"Allowing her to come on campus flies in the face of everything OU stands for. OU claims to be making measures to be more accepting of LGBTQ+ and minority students, but Ann Coulter actively campaigns against those same measures," the disgruntled student declared, evidencing Coulter's visit to the University of Colorado.
MacKay asserted that the involvement of armed security—whether stationed OUPD police officers or private—would be "potentially distressing to many students and has the capacity for escalating any protests." Funding from the Student Government Association would likely be allotted towards protective guards.
"We fail to see how allowing Ann Coulter fits OU's goals. Not only is she dead-set against OU's outreach to LGBTQ+ and minority populations..." the petition concluded.
