An Australian mother to a 21-year-old autistic man recently wrote a head-turning opinion piece, describing the process of deciding that her son was too socially inept to organically have sexual relations, and ultimately paying a prostitute to take his virginity.
The Guardian published the anonymous woman's piece, titled "A sex worker gave my autistic son the gift of confidence – and I organized the encounter," on Friday.
"Parenting takes you on some interesting twists and turns, but as I lay in the maternity ward gazing into my newborn’s eyes, never in my wildest dreams could I ever have imagined that 21 years later I’d be trawling the websites of sex workers looking for a suitable young lady to take his virginity," the article began. "Yet that’s exactly where I found myself earlier this year."
"I hope one day he will find the right girl, his own version of Love on the Spectrum. But how can we healthily channel his sexuality until then?" the woman wrote.
According to the woman, her son is physically and sexually mature, yet socially incapable of naturally getting a girlfriend. Identifying as bisexual with a preference for women, the man also was open with his mother on the sex he wanted to experience, and the type of pornography he enjoys. The mother commended him for his sexual openness, citing fears of her son becoming an "incel" due to sexual repression.
"This frankness is largely a blessing," she wrote. "Teenage boys now have unfettered access to internet pornography, but – unlike my son – don’t confide their viewing habits to their mother, giving her the opportunity to correct misperceptions. There’s a danger in socially isolated autistic males, with their obsessive tendencies, being exposed to misogynistic porn. Already they are overrepresented among "incels" (involuntary celibates), who are known for their anti-women views."
The mother then claimed that she first suggested the idea of paying for a sex worker to service her son a couple of years ago "when he had trouble getting past his first rejection," but the COVID-19 pandemic got in the way of making plans. As restrictions began to lift, she attended her first webinar on disability and sexuality.
Representatives from Touching Base, a Sydney-based charitable organization that sets up people with various disabilities with sex workers, answered questions on how and why they do what they do. One of the representatives was Anna, a prostitute who identifies as "neurodiverse." According to the charity's mission statement, they support the "intrinsic right of people with disability, including older people with disability, to sexual expression and physical intimacy, and values the professional services that sex workers provide to members of the community, including those living with disability."
The mother seeking to pay for a sexual encounter for her son felt "validated," and obtained a list of female sex workers from Touching Base. At her son's request, she chose the woman for him, and wound up picking Anna. She hired her for a four-hour "immersion experience" for her son for $1,000. The young man's father had chosen to hang back throughout this whole process, as he was worried that sex work of this nature is "exploitative."
On the day of the deed, the mother dropped her son off with Anna and left to go enjoy a coffee and window-shop, like "what any other mother would do after dropping her child off at a sex worker’s."
When she returned, her son told her, without going into detail, that it had been "the best day of [his] life." He now wants another visit with Anna, but he would have to fork over the money himself next time.
"Hopefully he will find a girlfriend one day and learn to enjoy sex in a loving relationship," the woman concluded. "Whatever happens, I will remain forever grateful to Anna for the gift of confidence she has given my son."
Sex workers on social media commended the unidentified woman's effort, with one fellow mother of an autistic child claiming that she has sex with autistic clients for money.
