On Wednesday, Nike partnered with trans-identified activist and social media influence Dylan Mulvaney and the TikTok star announced the deal via an Instagram story in which Mulvaney did jumping jacks and awkward stretches to ostensibly promote the sporting brand’s bras and leggings.
Fox News reports that following backlash, Nike posted a response on Instagram that read, "We welcome comments that contribute to a positive and constructive discussion: Be kind. Be inclusive. Encourage each other. Hate speech, bullying, or other behaviors that are not in the spirit of a diverse and inclusive community will be deleted."
Nike has become the newest company in a growing list to receive backlash for its partnership with Mulvaney.
Caitlyn Jenner called the parnership a "shame."
Detransitioner Oli London called the move equivalent to "slapping all women in the face by mocking them."
Last week, Mulvaney released a video for Bud Light as the beer's newest spokesperson and said the company sent the beer to commemorate Mulvaney's "365 Days of Girlhood" project.
Bud Light parent company, Anheuser-Busch, said in a statement the company "works with hundreds of influencers across our brands as one of many ways to authentically connect with audiences across various demographics and passion points. From time to time, we produce unique commemorative cans for fans and for brand influencers, like Dylan Mulvaney. This commemorative can was a gift to celebrate a personal milestone and is not for sale to the general public."
Mulvaney's "365 Days of Girlhood" project featured installments such as the sometime-actor frolicking in the woods and referring to women's genitals as "barbie pockets."
The series culminated in Mulvaney releasing a video revealing the results of a facial feminizaton surgery, a cosmetic operation the social media star said was "life saving."
Mulvaney also met with President Biden at the White House and received a letter of congratulations from Vice President Kamala Harris.
Mulvaney has had partnerships or sponsor deals with women's product lines such as Kate Spade's women's spring line of dresses, handbags, and shoes, Tampax, Maybelline, Ulta, and Kitchen Aid, among others.
Mulvaney has complained that "no one is in the DMs," and that dating as trans has not been easy, despite being attractive enough to be "husband stealer."
