Former President Donald Trump appeared on a phone call with Rob Schmitt Tonight on Friday to discuss Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who is expected to run for president in 2024 although he has not yet declared. Trump has reportedly taken some criticism for attacking his Republican opponent, but he said that he needed to get the word out about DeSantis.
When Schmitt made known that DeSantis would not consider being Trump’s Vice President in the 2024 presidential race, he asked if that was ever an option for Trump, who replied: "No, I never thought of it. I think we have a lot of great people in the Republican party, but I never thought of Ron as a VP choice. It’s an unlikely alliance."
"I don’t like saying these things about another Republican. As someone I feel like I’m running against, even though he hasn’t announced, I attack," Trump added.
Trump went on to suggest that it would be an uphill battle for DeSantis to win over the Republican electorate, as he "can’t win because he voted against social security. He voted against everything," which apparently included Medicare.
The former president also mentioned that the Florida Governor voted to raise "the age substantially for people getting social security."
Schmitt responded by saying that, nevertheless, "the infighting has begun" and that "it’s tough to watch, I think for a lot of viewers because I think a lot of people love you both, and support you both, but that’s politics as we move into primary season here."
Trump pivoted to discuss DeSantis’ moves during COVID, saying: "You have to get the word out there and, you know, I don’t like saying this about another Republican, but you have to, you know, everyone thought he did great on COVID. But if you look at the list, he did poorly on COVID."
"He was in the numbers, the same numbers as New York, a little bit worse than New York. He’s bad on education, bad on COVID, bad on many different things that people don’t know about."
It is not yet confirmed whether Governor DeSantis is planning to run for president in 2024.
