Was Sir John A. Macdonald a racist? — Cancel This

Sir John A. Macdonald was the first Prime Minister of Canada, and is most likely the most prominent figure in all of Canadian history. So why is he so controversial?

Over the past few years, a new trend has emerged alongside cancel culture. Activists have become increasingly interested in not only opposing the father of confederation but also advocate to tear down his statues and rename institutions named after him. The argument put forward is that Sir John was by today's standards, a bigoted colonialist who oppressed Aboriginals. Due to his historical crimes, we have seen multiple incidents where statues of Sir John have toppled and in one case, decapitated. Queens University alongside a high school in Nova Scotia are changing their name because of the association with the Prime Minister.

This is certainly part of a larger conversation occurring in the Western world. Many American Confederate statues have been toppled for similar reason, and it has become seemingly clear that our society is bitterly divided on this issue. We are divided not only politically, but also in the perception by which we view history.

Macdonald; Canada’s Justice System for its treatment of child murderers; and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his massive deficits, destructive energy policy and obsession with political correctness.
