The Golden State Warriors' celebratory visit to the White House on Tuesday was capped by a photo-op with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. While the latter stood with the team, the former elected to take a knee in front of everyone else as he smiled for the camera.
Biden beckoned Harris to join him and she replied, "I'm not doing that."
With the entire Warriors bench and staff behind him, Biden turned to face photographers and got down on one knee.
Biden's actions initially garnered cheers from everyone in attendance, including the players. While the president performed his stunt, Harris stood beside him cackling. She gestured that she wouldn't be following suit, and instead nestled herself in between two Warriors players.
Benny Johnson tweeted, "Kamala Harris refuses to drop to her knees in front of an entire NBA team. Kamala shouts 'I’m not doing that!; Joe Biden in turn gets on his knees before the Golden State Warriors. The White House crowd awkwardly gasps. Cringe. WATCH"
When the photo-op was over, Biden got up and bizarrely took on a guarding stance before turning to face the team again.
During their visit to the White House, Steph Curry presented Biden and Harris with Warriors jerseys, and delivered a speech ahead of the White House press briefing.
Curry acknowledged "the place sports has in bringing people together from all walks of life, all backgrounds," and thanked Biden on behalf of the basketball community for bringing Brittney Griner home from Russia.
The Warriors first visited the White House after winning the championship in 2015, and secured their second visit after defeating the Boston Celtics to win the 2022 title.
Taking a knee has also been a gesture used by athletes in recent years as a virtue signal over perceived racial injustice.
