Instead, it largely focused on the steps teens can take to ensure that their bodies align with their gender identities.
“There’s no one size fits all puberty experience,” the narrator begins. “If you’re trans, intersex, or non-binary, know that you’re not the only one feeling confused.”
After briefly highlighting the experiences of intersex people going through puberty, the video jumps into a discussion of the medical options available to those wishing to alter their natural progression.
“Some people decide on hormones or surgeries to help their bodies match up to their gender identity or how they feel inside about themselves,” the narrator explains, adding that the experience of seeing a body that doesn’t match your identity can be “uncomfortable, scary, and stressful.”
“Your gender identity is real,” the narrator says. “You should be the one to decide what changes you want to make to your body.”
The cartoon goes on to showcase a variety of options available to children, including medication to “delay puberty for a while” that “work like a stop sign.”
“Puberty blockers are safe,” they claim, “and can give you more time to figure out what feels right for you, your body, and your gender identity.”
The cartoon concludes by assuring those going through puberty that they have time to figure it out, directing them to Planned Parenthood’s website.
Reaction to the cartoon on social media has been resoundingly negative, with many criticizing Planned Parenthood's decision to target young people.
"Not content with staying in its lane as abortion champions, Planned Parenthood has produced a cartoon, aimed at children, promoting the virtues of puberty blocking pharmaceutical drugs," one user tweeted.
"Defund Planned Parenthood," wrote another.
