On Friday, Texas governor Greg Abbott announced that the first bus of migrants had arrived in New York City after being shuttled up from the US-Mexico border.
During the White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about the Biden administration's response to Gov. Abbott's initiative.
"Governor Abbott said he’s gonna start sending busloads of migrants to New York in an effort to share responsibility with other states," a reporter asked Jean-Pierre. "Does the White House have a reaction to that?"
"It's the latest stunt from the governor," she responded, "another stunt of bussing desperate migrants across the country."
Jean-Pierre accused Gov. Abbott of "using them as a political ploy," calling his actions "shameful."
"It’s costing the state of Texas $1.5 million," she added.
Jean-Pierre then took aim at Texas' "Operation Lone Star," claiming it "put law enforcement and national guardsmen in dangerous situations and resulted in a logistical nightmare needing federal rescue."
"His secondary inspection of trucks crossing into Texas cost a billion dollars a week in trade at one bridge alone," she added, "without turning up a single case of human or drug trafficking."
"There is a legal process that we have going on right now," Jean-Pierre concluded, "and if he cared about it, if he was really really serious, he would let that process move through. Instead he wants to play politics and use the lives of migrants who are desperate to be here, who are trying to find a better life for themselves."
In April, Gov. Abbott began sending buses full of migrants to Washington, DC in order to show the Biden administration that Texas communities are feeling "overwhelmed" by the situation at the border. He recently expanded the program to include New York City.
Last week, Gov. Abbott reached out to the mayors of both cities, inviting them to his state to see the reality of the situation for themselves.
