Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday that Canada needs to "accelerate the green transition," noting that Canada is doing its part now to help Europe in the face of Russia's "weaponizing" of energy.
"In the face of the current geopolitical situation with Russia weaponizing fossil fuel exports, we're standing shoulder to shoulder with our European friends and allies," Trudeau began.
"Canada is doing our part to add to the global energy supply right now. But it has never been clearer why we need to accelerate the green transition.
"You should have no doubts that Canada has what it takes to be a supplier of clean energy in a net-zero world," he concluded.
The prime minister has committed Canada to a greener future and has made this a keystone of his mandate. In June of this year, Trudeau said that Canada's oil industry made it "all the more important" to fight climate change.
During a joint press conference with California Governor Gavin Newsom, Trudeau said: "We have every excuse in the world, and the previous Conservative government to me used that excuse to say, 'oh no, Canada has too many fossil fuels, we can't do anything on leading on the environment.' And what I've understood and what I've always demonstrated is that the fact that we have that means that it's all the more important for us to step up and show real leadership on fighting climate change."
In November, Trudeau said that "even more ambitious" climate targets will come in the future, and those plans appear to be manifesting, as the Liberals now attack farmers' nitrogen fertilizer, something that industry experts say will cause food to supply to "obviously suffer."
