Earlier this week, The Post Millennial revealed that over the past month someone has been throwing human excrement at the councilmember’s home, and the "defund the police" advocate requested a permanent patrol presence monitoring her home from 5 pm-10 pm every day.
According to a press release/open letter to Seattle Democratic Mayor Bruce Harrell from the Socialist Alternative on behalf of Sawant, there have been six incidents where Sawant and her family discovered human waste in their yard, the most recent occurred on Oct. 13.
Sawant claimed that after one of the incidents, their dogs got into one of the bags and the family called the animal poison control hotline, not knowing what the substance was.
The radical added in the letter that she had demanded a sample of the fecal matter be sent to the lab for analysis but that "The police informed me the material can’t be sent to their lab for further investigation due to its hazardous nature."
According to Sawant, "I was informed yesterday, just five days after an investigation was opened on October 13th, that the case is being inactivated and no longer pursued at this time. This was after my husband reported an earlier incident (the fourth) on October 8th, when SPD officers immediately asked him, ‘What do you expect us to do?’ and did not open an investigation."
She then drew a comparison to "a glaring inconsistency" between "this approach and the way in which former Mayor Durkan, after a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest was held a short distance from her mansion, was provided with a 24-hour stakeout for a full year."
Sawant neglected to mention in her letter that she was the one who led the group of rioters during the deadly Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in the councilmember's district to the home of then-Mayor Jenny Durkan, the location of which was protected under confidentiality laws from her time as a US attorney. The rioters vandalized the house during the stunt and it was not a "peaceful Black Lives Matter protest," as she falsely claimed.
Additionally, it is standard procedure for the Seattle mayor to have round-the-clock protection and it was not as a result of the incident at Durkan’s home.
The self-described "socialist City Councilmember" who admitted to participating in Black Lives Matter protests, then claimed, "I am being told that my case of six threatening incidents involving human excrement doesn’t merit even a serious investigation, let alone protection."
Ironically, Sawant and other council members have supported decriminalizing misdemeanors. The incidents at Sawant’s home would classify as such, and therefore under the policy changes, if the suspect was caught, he would likely not be prosecuted. According to SPD, "At this time, the department has not found any evidence this case would meet the city or state standards for hate crime laws, but SPD will follow available leads should new information arise," and encouraged anyone with additional information about this case to contact them.
Despite SPD's statement, the Marxist claimed there is a "very high likelihood that this extreme and hostile behavior is politically motivated, and could turn into more serious and dangerous harassment."
On Thursday, despite Sawant claiming, "We’re also now being told by the police that they won’t be posting the video or photo publicly in order to identify the person responsible and that they will not make any further efforts to attempt to identify this person," SPD released pictures of the suspect. Witnesses described the suspect as an Asian man, approximately 5-foot 4-inches tall.
Sawant claimed in her letter that the pictures were taken by "members of my organization, Socialist Alternative," that "held a community safety watch outside of my house. Two of these community members witnessed the individual in the act and have a video where they question him immediately afterward."
Sawant also complained that "information about this investigation," an investigation she claimed was not happening, "was apparently leaked to the right-wing media by Seattle Police. A number of details included in the media could only have been provided by police. This leak is no small matter because the right-wing articles now serve to encourage further attacks on me and my family." She vowed to file a complaint with the Office of Police Accountability."
Though she claimed that the investigation was no longer ongoing she also said, "I appreciate the efforts of Detective Belshay and of the two other officers who came on Saturday to attempt to get fingerprints."
This is not the first time the radical councilmember has asked for police protection. In December 2020 following the riots that rocked the city in the wake of the death of George Floyd, Sawant demanded police protection in response to threats. However, it was later revealed that Sawant had used the threats for publicity before contacting the Seattle police.
Sawant was one of the most vocal members of the defund the police movement in Seattle which led to over 135 officers leaving the force this year, nearly 500 since 2020. The department cannot meet staffing minimums or minimum safety levels recommended by experts for a city the size of Seattle.
Following the defunding movement, crime skyrocketed, and the city is on track to beat last year’s record-high number of homicides, while rapes and assaults have also spiked. 911 response times have steadily climbed, and many residents reported being placed on hold.
During the 2020 riots, Sawant used her key to let protestors into Seattle City Hall after hours so that the mob could occupy the building which was also closed to the public due to the pandemic.
In addition to Sawant supporting the deadly occupation of six blocks of Seattle during the riots in 2020, her staff set up tents inside the zone to collect signatures for a ballot initiative she was promoting at the time.
